Penelitian Iwan Istanto berfokus pada Kontrol dan Otomasi sejak tahun 2014. Banyak simulasi dan algoritma kontrol telah dikembangkan dalam katup servo elektro-hidrolik, seperti kontrol PID, kontrol PID umpan maju, dan kontrol mode geser. Ia memahami Model in the loop (MIL), Processor in the loop (PIL) dan Hardware in the loop (HIL) dengan menggunakan Speedgoat atau Simulink Real Time dari MATLAB. Selain itu, Iwan Istanto telah melakukan penelitian dalam Pemrosesan Gambar dan Pembelajaran Mesin sejak tahun 2022.
